On 24 October 2026, more than 300 guests came together at Zollverein to celebrate World Polio Day and 75 years of Rotary Deutschland Gemeindienst. Rotarians, partners, supporters and guests from business and civil society gained insights into where the fight against polio stands today, connected with one another and sent a visible message together: we will stay committed until polio is history.

What made the day special

Talks and conversations on the main stage, the joint March of Dimes across the grounds, networking and a barbecue with live music beneath the winding tower: a day full of encounters that sparked new ideas, contacts and concrete next steps.

Where do we stand in ending polio?

The encouraging news: an entire generation of children has grown up without fear of polio. Two of the three wild poliovirus types have already been eradicated, and the final transmission chains remain concentrated in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. Eradication is possible.

What is Rotary’s impact?

The honest message is that the job is not finished yet. As long as the virus circulates anywhere, it can spread again, especially where vaccination rates decline or health systems come under pressure. The last mile requires endurance, organization, safe vaccination campaigns and reliable funding.

World Polio Day 2026 gave the fight against polio an enormous boost. This is made possible by a powerful lever: the Gates Foundation triples the Rotary funds committed to polio. That way, every euro donated has many times the impact.

Gemeinsam in Bewegung

Strava-Challenge

Vom 24.

Moving together

Strava Challenge

From 24 September to World Polio Day on 24 October, Team End Polio – the athletes of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) – called on people to move for a polio-free world. Running, cycling, swimming, wheeling or walking: every minute logged in the Strava app counted towards a shared goal of 60 million minutes. This year the challenge also ran in Germany for the first time.

The result: 102,447 people took part and logged 140 million minutes of movement – more than double the target of 60 million. Each minute honours the health workers and volunteers who vaccinate around 400 million children against polio every year.

To round things off, the Strava runners joined guests at Zollverein on 24 October for the joint March of Dimes – dressed in red as a visible sign of support for End Polio Now.

Every cap counts

Small caps – big help

What would otherwise end up in the bin becomes a vaccination: bottle caps are made of valuable metal that is easy to recycle. Collected, bundled and sold to recyclers, the small caps turn into money – and the proceeds go to the fight against polio through End Polio Now.

The result for World Polio Day 2026: more than 1 million bottle caps – that means 1,000 additional vaccine doses for children who would otherwise be unprotected.

Families, schools, nurseries, clubs, restaurants and companies all collected. A big thank you to everyone who saved, gathered and handed in caps! Anyone who would like to keep collecting is best advised to contact their local Rotary club.
